“WINTRY” SUMMER

BAD FOR BUSINESS HOT WEATHER CLOTHES HAVE POOR MARKET The unseasonable weather this summer has meant a big loss of trade to v/anganui drapery firms, the market for summer clothes and accessories being very poor in comparison with last year when a hot summer was experienced. The market for summer attire, including bathing costumes and light dress fabrics, has been very disappointing according to retailers. Hopes were held at Christmas that the New Year would see an improvement in the weather but even worse conditions have prevailed and drapery firms will have large supplies of summer goods on hand at the end of the season.

Drapery firms are not the only concerns to suffer. Ice cream manufacturers, shoe shops, milk bars, swimming baths, soft drink manufacturer* and a host of others will all find trade restricted by the unseasonable weather.

“Had the weather been fine from the beginning of summer the volume of trade at Christmas would have been much greater for summer goods would have found a good market," declared a retailer. “When light clothes and bathing togs should be selling like hot cakes it is heartbreaking to see people getting about in heavy overcoats and winter-weight clothes.” Bathing costume,s in particular, had met with a poor market, he added.
