SEWER OVERFLOWS
CARLTON AVENUE TROUBLE RESULT OF HEAVY RAIN Heavy rain earlier in Ihe evening caused the sewer system to back up in the river end of Carlton Avenue last night about seven o’clock and to run back through sumps into gardens and lawns. The sewer which was damaged recently by a subsidence in the roadway at the corner of Taupo Quay and Carlton Avenue Extension was responsible for last night's trouble. The ordinary system has been out of action for about two weeks and the Carlton Avenue sewerage has been run into the Carlton Terrace pipes. The heavy rain placed too severe a load on the system with the result that the waste was unable to get away and worked back through the sumps. Speaking to a "Chronicle” reporter last night, a Carlton Avenue resident said that the backing up of the sewerage had made a terrible mess of gardens and lawns. He took a serious view of the position because of the danger of an epidemic breaking out. It is expected that it will be at least a week before the system in Carlton Avenue Extension is returned to normal and the road open for traffic again.
