Waverley’s Successful Carnival AUSTRALIAN DIVER’S FINE EXHIBITION MANY VISITING SWIMMERS A brief outline of the season’s activities in promoting interest in swimming was given last evening by Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui and president of the Wanganui Swimming Centre, at the first carnival held by the newly-formed Waverley Swimming Club. Mr. Cotterill congratulated Waverley residents on the generous support accorded the movement to build the splendid baths in which the carnival was held, and also expressed himself as very pleased at the encouraging attendance which narked the inaugural carnival. An ntimation that the services of the centre’s swimming instructor would >e available at the Waverley baths luring January was also given by Mr. Cotterill, who appealed for support n the centre’s share of the national ‘Learn-to-Swim” campaign in February. The carnival was held in fine hough overcast weather, a light .hower falling just before tne concluding events were decided. The atendance taxed the seating accommolation to the utmost. Swimmers preent from Stratford, Hawera, Patea, Vanganui Central, Wanganui East inti Aramoho, in addition to a large •epresentation of Waverley members. During the evening a spectacular lisplay of diving was given by Mr. Borman Dyer, Australian champion. Respite the fact that there was only he low board from which to demoncrate his ability, Mr. Dyer showed he spectators some unusual and wellexecuted dives.
