MEETING PLACE FOR EMPIRE’S YOUTH

A LONDON PROPOSAL SUPPORTED BY LORD BLEDISLOE LONDON, Jan. 4. A plan for the construction of a “Youth City” in London, preferably on the old Crystal Palace site, as a central meeting place for the Empire's youth, was outlined to-day by Lord Bessbrough at the headmasters’ conference at the Guildhall. The movement is primarily designed to evoke a spirit of Empire and co-opera-tion among students and ex-students of secondary school age.

A committee has been formed comprising former Governor-Generals, including Lord Bledisloe for New Zealand, Lord Stonehaven for Australia, and Lord Bessbrough for Canada. Lord Lloyd represents Britain. Lord Bessbrough, broadcasting, said the total cost of the Youth City pro-

posal was estimated at about £1,000,000 if the whole scheme was carried out. Half of this sum would be devoted to a great central building and the remainder would be required for ten Dominion or colonial houses at £50,000 each. The organisers hope to obtain £250,000 for the central building from the public funds and efforts will be made to raise another £250,000 from individuals, national organisations, educational trusts, city companies, and schools.
