NEEDS OF AUSTRALIA VIEW OF LORD STRABOLGI SYDNEY A BETTER BASE THAN SINGAPORE [By Telegraph—Prese Association—Copyright] Received Jan. 5, 11.6 p.m. PERTH, Jan. 5. “I put naval defence first for Australia and air defence second,” said Lord Strabolgi, in an interview today. “You have tremendous trade routes to safeguard, but I think that Australia’s most urgent air defence need is a powerful fleet of long-range bombing and fighting aircraft. “I also think Sydney would provide a better base for battleships than Singapore.”
