HUGE TURTLE
CAUGHT FROM LAUNCH FIGHT OFF CAPE BRETT AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. A huge turtle, which has been seer, by several deep-sea anglers in the vicinity of Cape Brett for several days’, has been caught by an American visitor, Mr. P. Godby, of Montana, off Cape Brett. It turned the scale at 10621 b., being the heaviest specimen of marine life to be weighed at Bay of Islands. The turtle was seen two days before by Dr. T. H. Pettit, of Auckland, president of the New Zealand Deep-sea Anglers’ Association. He said a huge head appeared above the water about 20 yards from the launch. The neck alone appeared to be lOin. or 12in. in diameter. The turtle dived and disappeared. It was also seen from another launch. The turtle was sighted the following day by Mr. W. R. Macpherson, of Portsmouth. When seen later by Mr. Godby it was about five miles from Cape Brett towards the Ninepins. The turtle took the bait on an ordinary deep-sea line and immediate ly jumped from the water and then sped along the surface “like a torpedo.” It was harpooned, but fought for an hour before being brought alongside. It was found impossible to haul it into the cockpit, so it was towed to Otehei Bay, where it was weighed.
