WEATHER FORECAST
Meteorological Office, Wellington, Thursday, Jan. 5, 3 p.m. An anti-cyclone still covers the northern Tasman Sea and northern New Zealand while a series of weak disturbances is crossing the South Tasman Sea and southern New Zealand. Forecast.—Winds: Light southerliy in the north, elsewhere moderate to strong, westerly to north-westerly predominating with gales in some places about and south of Cook Strait. A change to southwesterly advancing later from the south. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough in places south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light easterly winds in the north, otherwise between north-west and southwest. Moderate in the central portion with moderate seas, strong in the southern portion with rough seas. Weather: Cloudy to overcast in western districts from Taranaki southwards and in the far south with rain at times, but falls only light in the North Island. Showers later in Otago and Canterbury but weather otherwise fair to fine, with mild temperatures.
