VISIT TO TUNIS
FRENCH PREMIER ARRIVE AT ANCESTRAL HOME . OF THE BEY “TUNISIANS GIVE INFINITE THANKS TO FRANCE” (By Telegraph— Association —Copyright) Received Jan. 4. 5.5 p.m. TUNIS, Jan. 3. For the first time in history a French Premier visited the ancestral home of the Bey of Tunis. M. Daladier was accorded a tumultuous reception when he came ashore from the cruiser Foch. He inspected the coastal forts and drove to the city, which was placarded with expressions of loyalty. He reviewed a spectacular march of 25,000 colonial troops, while squadrons of aircraft flew overhead. M. Daladier told the Bey that France will continue to contribute to the development of Tunis and give all the protection that is needed. The Bey replied: "Tunisians give infinite thanks to France and show their gratitude and attachment." Several members of the Nationalist Party were arrested in minor antiFrench demonstrations outside the Bey’s palace as M. Daladier was departing. Italian business men closed their premises in obedience to orders. British Colony Ready. Seventy-five thousand British residents handed M. Daladier a resolution giving an assurance that the entire British Colony is ready to answer France’s appeal in a time of crisis.
