SOUTH AFRICA ON THE DEFENSIVE ENGLAND’S SPIN BOWLERS NOURSE AND BALASKAS BAT WELL [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] CAPETOWN, Jan. 3. England’s spin bowlers quickly dismissed South Africa in the second cricket Test. After using K. Fames and W. J. Edrich to get a shine off the ball, W. R. Hammond relied on the slow men, T. W. Goddard, D. V. P. Wright, and H. Verity. They took two wickets each and at stumps South Africa had eight down for 213, in reply to England’s score of 559 for nine, declared. The South Africans were on the defensive from the outset and scored only 26 in an hour. B. Mitchell batted dourly for 255 minutes. A. D. Nourse, however, and V. Balaskas, who hit Verity for four successive boundaries, livened up the batting toward the close. Details:— England. First Innings. L. Hutton, b Gordon 17 E. Paynter, lbw, b Langton 1 P. A.
