FEARS OF AMERICAN WOOL GROWERS
CONCESSIONS TO AUSTRALIA DESIRE THAT NONE BE MADE (By Telegraph—Presa Association —Copyright; Received Jan. 3, 8.10 p.m. WYOMING, Jan. 2. An exchange of correspondence between. the acting-Secretary of State for the United States, Mr. Sumner Welles, and Senator J. C. O’Mahoney, of Wyoming, has disclosed that American wool producers are putting great pressure on the State Department not to discuss a wool tariff in any possible trade treaty negotiations with Australia. Mr. O’Mahoney wrote to Mr. Welles warning him against concessions in view of the depressed conditions or American agriculture, to which Mr. Welles replied that full opportunity for the domestic wool-growing industry to presents its views and supporting data would be given should negotiations begin. Mr. O'Mahoney thereupon demanded a flat statement that wool would not men be considered. “In the event of formal negotiations .being undertaken with Australia I should like to secure from you or Mr. Cordell Hull (Secretary of State) a letter which I may be able to transmit to the producers of wool in Wyoming, and throughout the West, setting at rest their present fears,” he wrote.
