HOUSES IN DOMINION OVERCROWDED
WHAT SURVEY REVEALS The serious overcrowding which exists in the cities and towns of NewZealand is strikingly revealed in a summary published in the Local Authorities’ Handbook for 1936-37. Under the Housing Survey Act, 1935, all local bodies were called upon to report on the extent to which the housing accommodation in their .districts fell short of reasonable require'ments. i Up to June, 1938. 105 of the 119 ' local bodies required by the Act to ■ make surveys had furnished returns to the Department of Housing Construction. The returns of 90 towns with a population totalling 605,829, and containing 163,429 dwellings, have been analysed as follows: — Buildings used as dwellings which arc unsatisfactory but reparable 21,697 Buildings which are totally unsatisfactory 3,653 Dwelling units in which the equipment is only partly satisfactory 16,174 Dwelling units where the equipment is totally unsatisfactory 13,831 Houses at present providing accommodation below the minimum standard 20,260 Number of surplus persons accommodated in these houses 50,606
