FOREST RESERVES

FIRE REGULATIONS DISREGARDED BY VISITORS TWO NORTH AUCKLAND CASES DARGAVILLE, Dec. 28. The need for observing the regulation regarding the lighting of fires in State forest reserves was emphasised yesterday, when Mr. E. T. Frost, North Auckland representative of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, was touring through the Waipoua Forest. He came upon a group of four women, who had kindled a fairly large fire in a cutting right under a group of kauri trees on the road. "A spark from a fire al this place carried by occasional gusts of wind into the dry pukaha at the root of the kauris mignt have caused w hat would have been a national catastrophe, ’ said Mr. Frost, who notified the forest service officers. Mr. Frost added that this was the second lire he noticed on the same day in the forest in an unauthorised place. The other one was only a few hundred yards away from a proper fireplace near a big tree. The offender this time was a man. “It is a sad commentary on the intelligence of some of the travelling public, who so disregard the regulations made for the preservation oi one of the finest natural stands of forest left in our sadly-denuded land," addea Mr. Frost. “It behoves the authorities to keep a careful watch and the public to co-operate with them by acting . honorary rangers every time they eater the park.’’
