VISITING BASEBALL TEAM

MATCHES WITH WANGANUI GREAT INTEREST AROUSED. During the week-end the Southern Star baseball team, of Wellington, played a series of three matches with Wanganui teams on the Helmore Street grounds. The matches created much interest and provided the now rapidly growing number of Wanganui fans with some interesting piay. Southern Star v. Pirates. This game provided seme thrilling baseball for spectators and players alike. Southern Star showed its superiority from the start, but the Pirates’ determined play kept the score low. Star’s battery was very good and their fielding played havoc with Pirates ‘base-runners.’ The Pirates’ pitcher, however, was disappointing. Outstanding players for both sides were S. Green and Kench, o' Pirates, who caught several excellent catches, and Mcllwee, of Star, who played a good all-round game. Final score.—Southern Star 13, Pirates 6. Southern Star v. Harriers A. This was a very evenly contested game and both teams gave of their best. Play was not confined to any particular part of the field, but all fielders had plenty of work to do. The game started very fast. Southern Star gaining 11 of their 14 runs in the first innings and Harriers seven. I Then followed a series of “ducks” for I both teams, until near the end of the' game, when the other points were added. Dayly and Broad played well for Harriers but no member of Southern Star merited recognition, each member of the team pulling his weight. Final Score.—Southern Star 14, Harriers 10.

Southern Star v. Star A. This game, the last of the series, was the most exciting and towards the end there was some tense moments. Star A hit very hard but could not run against the Southern Star’s excellent team-work in the field, especially an the first base. From the fifth to the seventh innings the score remained at 10 all and it was decided to continue the game to nine innings. Excitement grew as Star in their last innings added another point, giving them a lead of one, but at the eleventh hour Southern Star saved their game and added five more points to their score. Outstanding players were Hamling and Cook for Southern Star and Wakling and Broad for Star A. Final Score.—Southern Star 15, Star A 11.
