FAR MORE ARRIVALS

MIGRATION RESUMED FIGURES FOR EIGHT MONTHS For the first eight months—ending in November—of the present financial year 3388 persons who intend to reside permanently in this country arrived at various New Zealand ports. This number of immigrants is more than 1300 more than for the same period last year, and almost exactly double the number for the eight months of 1936. These figures given in the Abstract of Statistics for December indicate that the Dominion is a desirable place of residence for people overseas—both within and beyond the British Empire. The figures for this year, too, are interesting because they reverse the position of the two previous years in which the number of new permanent residents arriving in the country was more than offset by the number of people leaving the Dominion permanently. Arrivals who intend to stay in this country so far this year outnumber departing New Zealanders who do not intend to come back by about 900—which means an increase in the population of more than 100 a month. The figures setting out the increase in the number of immigrants taking up residence "here, and those departing in each case permanently), are as follows: Eight Months Ended November. 1936 1937 1938 Arrivals 1696 2520 3388 Departures ... 2510 1545 2491
