GENERAL NEWS. The final snooker tourney of ‘the year was held at the Otaihape Men's Club on Wednesday evening when over 40 members participated in the play. The winners were Messrs A. Gibb and J. Bosomworth. A tasty supper was greatly enjoyed and members took the opportunity of exchanging Christmas greetings. PERSONAL. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Darrell left for Whakatane on Thursday evening. TAIHAPE BOWLERS FOR DOMINION TOURNEY The following rink from the Taihape Bowling Club will compete in tthe Dominion tourney, to be held at Auckland early in January:—A. M. Ryan, M. Geor, C. Murphy, and A. P. Seccombe. This is the rink that inflicted a decisive defeat upon the St. John's Club, Wanganui, in a recent match for the Keesing Cup. Taihape bowlers will wish its representatives every success at the tournament. TRAINING COLLEGE CANDIDATES Two pupils of the Taihape District High School, Priscilla McKenzie and Murray King, are amongst the successful candidates for admission to tthe Teachers’ Training College. Both were in the sixth form last year and gained higher leaving certificates. They will train for the teaching profession at Christchurch. C. V. Gallagher and E. S. Adlam will also enter the Teachers’ Training College next year. Both are ex-pupils of the Taihape School. SPOTTING COMPETITION Keen interest was manifest in the “spotting” competition conducted by the Taihape Retailers’ Association, adults as well as children finding the competition a most fascinating one. Shop windows were closely inspected and the search for the elusive “spot” proved a pleasant pastime. Over 40 entries were received and the results are as follow:—Nelle Bowater 73. Bernard Lyons 73, Peter Naylor 73, R. Auld 72, P. MacCallum 72. D. Bridson 71, Marie Cray 71, Greta Smith 71. The possible was 77. In view of the number of ties it was necessary to divide the prizemoney, the first three competitors sharing the first, second and one consolation prize, the next two taking consolation prizes and the last three sharing a consolation prize of 10s 6d. The association increased the prizemoney so that the last three competitors would receive 3s 6d each instead of 3s 4d. The committee have posted orders to the prize-winners, and wish to thank all those who entered for the competition. PRIZE HEIFER The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.. Ltd., has specially imported a pedigree Polled Angus heifer from England on behalf of Mr. Joseph Webb, of Taihape. The animal arrived in Wellington after being removed from the quarantine station. It gained first prize at the Highland Society’s show at Aloha (Scotland) and second prize at the English Royal Show. The heifer cost Mr. Webb a very large sum or money and is a particularly fine animal, which will doubtless be the subject of much interest when it arrives in Taihape. BUSY POSTAL OFFICERS Christmas week is always a busy period for members of the staff of the Taihape Post Office, and this year has proved no exception. Incoming and outgoing Christmas mail has assumed exceptionally large proportions, over 125 bags being handled in one day. Accommodation for the public at the counter has been taxed to the utmost and the improvements for which the Retailers’ Association has been agitating, are long overdue. PERSONAL Miss O. Williams is leaving Taihape shortly to take up nursing at Auckland. Messrs. I. F. Major and N. W. Glenny, of Taihape, and H. K. Joblin, of Hastings, have passed in certain subjects in the diploma in banking examination conducted by the University of New Zealand. Mr. J. Teirney, of Taihape, left on Friday evening for Whangarei, where he will be married on Tuesday. Mr. H. Barrett leaves Taihape on Monday on a motor tour of the South Island. Mr. and Mrs. J. Q. McWilliam left for Wellington on Friday en route to D'Urville Island (near Marlborough), where they will spend a camping holiday. Mr. and Mrs. T, C. Kincaid and family intend spending the Christmas vacation at Milford, Auckland. Miss M. Couper left for Wanganui on Thursday afternoon. Miss P. Durrant arrived in Taihape by the Limited express from Auckland on Wednesday. The condition of Mr. Hector Gregory, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Greg-

ory, of Taihape, who is in hospital in Suva suffering from typhoid fever, Is still serious, according to a cablegram received on Friday by his parents. The town clerk (Mr. W. G. Holloway) is spending his annual leave in Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Bradley, of Wanganui, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Spooner, of Taihape. GENERAL NEWS A man who was celebrating the festive season not wisely but too well in Taihape on Thursday, attracted the attention of several children who amused themselves by pouring water down his neck. Eventually he became noisy and the police deemed it advisable to place him in custody. He appeared before Mr. H. Johnston, J.P., at the Taihape Court on Friday morning, and was convicted and discharged. Another first offending inebriate also made his appearance in Court and he, too, was discharged after a conviction had been entered. Several members of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club will compete at the Mangatainoka sports on Boxing Day, and also at the Feilding meeting on January 1 and 2. / The Christmas competition conducted by the Taihape Municipal Band has now been finalised, the prize-win-ners being as follow: Messrs. F. Gledhill 1, J. Petterson 2, F. Kelly (Omatane) 3. The Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association will hold their annual New Year’s dance in the Town Hall on Monday, January 2. This popular annual event is always awaited with eager expectation and preparations are under way to make the forthcoming dance something jut of the ordinary. Particulars will be advertised.
