TAIHAPE

COMING-OF-AGE MISS ALMA MILLAR On Friday evening a large number of friends gathered at the “White House" to honour Miss Alma Millar on the occasion of her coming-of-age. Miss Millar is a popular member of Taihape’s younger set. The tables were tastefully decorated by friends of Miss Millar. The evening was pleasantly spent in dancing, music being supplied by Miss V. Montgomery, Messrs. J. and R. Steedman, R. Webb and C. Murray. Mr. J. Steedman acted as M.C. During the evening, Mr. F. Sparks, in the unavoidable absence of Mr. A. Millar, presented Miss Millar with a large key in token of her “Freedom of the House." Miss Millar returned thanks in a happy little speech during which she expressed her gratitude for the many beautiful presents which she had received and added that she felt grateful to those who had arranged the party in her honour. The toast of “Miss Alma Millar” was proposed by Mr. F. Sparks and honoured with the greatest enthusiasm. Mr. C. Gordon replied on behalf of Miss Millar. Other toasts were also honoured, and the birthday cake, which was made by Alma herself, was cut and distributed among the guests. Dancing was then continued until a late hour, when a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Among those present were the following:—Mesdames Sparks, C. Gordon, R. Thomas, K. Ford, F. O'Keefe, A. Millar, senr., A. Millar, jnr., Misses F. and B. Sparks, P. and V. Montgomery, N. Ryan, C. and D. McDonnell, E. and R. Durbridge, M., H., ana R. GENERAL NEWS Questioned by a reporter yesterday regarding the failing of the siren to sound on Armistice Day at 10.59 a.m. in order to warn citizens that the time to observe two minutes’ silence had arrived, the superintendent of the Talhape Fire Brigade (Mr. J. Mortiand) said that he had not been asked to make any arrangements in regard to the matter as in the past and naturally presumed that instructions had been given to somebody else to sound

the siren. He saw a notice in a newspaper advising when the siren would 'sound, but his co-operation in the matter was not solicited. Had he been requested to attend to the matter he would certainly have done so.
