PUTIKI TENNIS CLUB

COURTS OHiCIALLY OPENED PLEASLNG DAY’S PROGRAMME. The opening day of the Putiki Tennis Club was held on Saturday afternoon and it was really very pleasing to see all the young members and a great many of the older members on the courts. A stall with fancy goods, ice cream and soft drinks did good business. A number of our pakeha friends came along too. Rev. P. Kokiri, president of the club, thanked all those who had come along. The club, he said, is closely connected with the church, and the game of tennis should always be encouraged among our young people. Mr. Tonga Takarangi then spoke, and said he felt highly honoured a. being asked to open the day. Mr. Takarangi, one of the older members of the club, spoke with great feeling, recalling the opening days of previous years when there had been many of those who had now passed on present. He thanked our pakeha friends for coming along, and then declared the courts open. Mr. Emia, another old member of the club, endorsed Mr. Takarangi’s remarks.

Mr. Wiki Phillips thanked tiie speakers and all present on behalf of the younger members, for their kind interest. A combined doubles competition was held, and after quite an exciting final game, Miss B. Kokiri and Mr. T. Sutherland won from Miss W. Pineaha and Mr. Tenga Takarangi. The prizes were then presented to Miss Kokiri and Mr. Sutherland, and the results of the lucky number competition announced, the winner of the hairpin work dressing table set being Miss Jean Mete King!. During the afternoon, tea was serviced by the ladies, to whom many thanks are due. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Marumaru, Mrs. Leach and Mrs. Maihi Mete King!, for their help in getting goods together for the fancy stall, and to Mr. and Mrs. Marumaru

who donated two tennis nets to the club; also to Mr. and Mrs. Whitely for their very kind interest and donation of a pair of Dunlop fennis balls.
