ECONOMIC CONFLICT

ENGLAND AND iNY WAY OF AVOIDI..J IT [ British Official Wireless ] RUGBY, Dec. 4. The Times devotes a leading article to-day to the statement of Mr. R. s. Hudson, secretary of the Department of Overseas Trade, concerning the possibility of the organisation of British industry to fight German trade methods. It makes the point that tiic conflict whicli some persons affected to see between Mr. Hudson's statement and former declarations by the Prime Minister and the President ot the Board of Trade that Britain had no reason to look unfavourably on German economic expansion in southeastern Europe is due to a misunderstanding. . The Times points out that method which have proved effective in a part of the world where the British share of trade has not hitherto been considerable could easily be extended to other parts where she is vitally concerned, and that therefore while nobody wants or could want to prevent the natural development of Germany in south-eastern Europe, British industry must be prepared to withstand the wider impact of such methods. In the opinion of The Times, the best way to avoid an economic conflict with Germany is to British industry to be prepared to fight effectively, if compelled to do so, to secure fair treatment.
