CANTON DELTA

OCCUPIED BY JAPANESE CHINESE SUPPLIES CLAIMED TO BE CUT OFF ATTACK FRUSTRATED [By Telegraph—Frese Association—Copyright! TOKIO, Dec. 4. The Japanese have completely occupied the Chiukiang delta, Canton, and captured a position eight miles south of Fatshan. A communique claims that this will mean the cutting off of General Chiang Kai-shek’s munition supplies, eliminating the Chinese attempt to deliver a counter-attack at Canton. SEE-SAW FIGHTING WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consulate-Gen-eral from Chungking this morning:— Owing to our counter-attacks, the enemy in Kiangsi, Hupeh, and Hunan Provinces are still on the defensive. East of Kwangtung fighting continues in the neighbourhood of Tsungfah, Fahyuen, and Samshul. The fighting in these areas has developed into what one may call see-saw fighting, the positions changing hands frequently. The enemy suffered heavy losses.

On the Canton-Kowloon railway, the enemy, in making use of their superiority in gun fire, forced us to withdraw from the railway line, but our troops are still on each side of the line and are putting up a stubborn resistance and causing heavy losses to the enemy. We recaptured Shumchun, on the Hongkong border.
