INTER-CLUB MATCHES WANGANUI EAST COURTS WEEK-END RESULTS At the week-end, Wanganui East Tennis Club teams played friendly matches with teams representing district country clubs Okoia and Westmere. The Rata matches were abandoned owing to rain. Although overnight rain made the Wanganui East courts on the heavy side, they were in excellent order. Okoia sent in a fairly strong team, but Wanganui East won by 14 sets to 10, although in both men’s singles and women’s singles the sets were 3 all. The visitors lost ground in the combined doubles, Wanganui East winning 5 of the 6 sets. One of the best contests was the men’s singles between Hawkins (Wanganui East) and C. Hoffman (Okoia). Against Westmere, Wanganui East had a much easier road to victory, winning by 10 sets to 4. Owing to an absentee in the Westmere men’s team, J. Ward, the Wanganui East captain, played for Westmere. Westmere women were a shade too good for the home players and won 2 out of the 3 sets, Mrs. Mackay being the only winner for Wanganui East. In the men’s singles, Ward (Westmere) and Walker (Wanganui East) had a long, hard tussle, the former winning 9-8. Ward at one stage was down 7-2, but made a remarkably fine recovery.
Walker and Munro (Wanganui East) did well to win 9-6 against Ward, who was partnered by I. Sutton, a W.L.T.A. ranking player. The combined doubles between Ward and Miss Taylor (Westmere) and Walker and Miss Wakely (Wanganui East) was marked by good back-line play and, after a close contest, the Westmere pair won 9-7.
