The first Hawke Cup challenge of the season ended in a debacle. After only one and a-half day’s play Waikato, the holders, defeated Bay of Plenty by an innings and 211 runs on a tricky wicket which gave the bowlers the upper hand throughout the match.

Waikato, in the first innings, made 263, the principal scorers being A. J. Aitken (85 not out) and J. Everest (39). Bowling for Bay of Plenty L. R. Spring took four for 80 off 36 overs, R. Smith three for 87, and B. Budd, two for 47. Bay of Plenty, in their first innings, made only 30. A great bowling feat was performed by E. Everest, who took seven for 15 off ten overs. In the second innings Bay of Plenty made only 22 in a regular procession of batsmen under the magnificent bowling of R. Clough, who was almost unplayable on tne wicket and took eight wickets for nine runs off eight overs. Waikato will defend the Cup again at the New Year against Marlborough.
