LIVESTOCK MARKET

WANGANUI HORSE FAIR POOR DEMAND FOR UNBROKEN HORSES. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., conducted their final horse fair of the season on Saturday, when 130 horses of all sorts were offered to a fair attendance of buyers. This sale is never as well attended as the early spring sale and competition is never as keen. Farmers are busy at this time of the year. The unbroken section, although a light entry, was of good average quality but the market was dull, most farmers having insufficient time for breaking-in horses. The broken hack section was also neglected, the reason being that back-country farmers are too busy with their shearing. The broken draught section was good and met with a satisfactory sale and keen competition for good young draughts broken to all work. A good percentage of the sales in this section went to Auckland and Waikato buyers. Competition was keen for the three South Island consignments of draughts. The range of prices is as follow: Broken Draughts. Good young heavy weight mares all work, £33, £4O; ditto, geldings, £25, £32; aged draught, £lB. £24; good half-draughts; all work. £l7 10s, £22 10s; aged, £lO, £l2; spring carters very light entry, £8 10s, £lO 10s. Hacks and Light Harness Horses.— Good average hacks, £8 to £l2 10s; aged to £6. Unbroken Horses.—Three quarterdraughts, £l2, £2O; spring carters and half-draughts, £8 10s, £l4; hacks, £3, £7 10s.
