Three ships, namely the Unite; States freighters Collamer and American Traveler and the Norwegian linei Europe, are racing across the Nortr Atlantic following a distress signa from the German liner Deutschland which is fighting a fire in one of hei holds 200 miles south-east of Cape Race (Newfoundland). The vessel ha; 591 passengers and 390 of a crew. Conflicting reports caused uncertainty whether there was immediate danger. The Associated Press report ed the receipt of a message that the fire was under control at 8.29 p.m. two hours after the first signal, bui the passing hours brought no confirmation. Coastal stations reported that the Deutschland was continuing hei distress signals, although the extent ol the lire was not indicated. The rescuers expect to arrive al dawn. All were originally within 7; miles of the vessel. The situation is complicated by a gale which is sweeping up from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and which is expected to strike the Deutschland before dawn.
