SANDPIPER BOMBING
THOUGHT DUE TO MISTAKE. Received Oct. 26. 5.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, Oct. 25. The Japanese China Sea Fleet has issued a statement to the effect that the authorities believe that the bombing of the British gunboat Sandpiper at Changsha was due to a mistake, and that they are still investigating. An eye-witness at Changsha says thatjthe gunboat had not moved for two days and was flying the British flag. The superstructure was painted red, white and blue. Six bombers flew slowly overhead and suddenly veered and dived in mass formation, each releasing a single bomb, only one of which landed near the gunboat. Fragments of the bomb rattled aboard the Sandpiper, smashing a hatch and holing the cabins. A Tokio message states that naval headquarters reiterate that the bombing of the Sandpiper was accidental. They say that British information led the Japanese naval command to believe that the Sandpiper was at Hankow.
