MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
LAST NIGHT’S MEETING The Marton Borough Council met on Wednesday evening. Mr. F. Purnell (Mayor) presided over Crs. G. B. Gregory, T. Barton, A. Howard, W. B. Winchcombe, and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). Correspondence was dealt with as follows: — Circular letter from the Undersecretary, Department of Internal Affairs, calling attention to the New Zealand Centennial Act, 1938, validating expenditure in connection with the Centennial celebrations, and amendments to various Acts affecting local body administration. —The matter was referred to the Finance Committee to bring down a report when the Act is available. Secretary N.Z. Centennial Exhibition, wrote relative to legislation validating expenditure, advising that the Exhibition Company is now calling for funds and asking the council to forward half the contribution approved by the council, to be paid within the present financial year; also forwarding a blue print of the exhibition layout.—Received. Secretary N.Z. Centennial Exhibition, wrote asking particulars of historical events, scenic attractions, and industrial and primary activities of the district, and requesting the council to submit any information relating thereto, to the committee.—Received. From Director of Housing Construction, with reference to local body services and payment of rates on houses erected under the Government Housing Scheme. —The letter is to be acknowledged and the contents noted, the council being of opinion that the department should pay ordinary rates from the time of occupation.
Transport Department, wrote with reference to pedestrian crossings, forwarding new proposals in respect of constructing signs indicating and lighting of crossings.—Received. Secretary National Relief Fund for Spanish Refugee Children, acknowledging recepit of contributions made to the fund, advising that the committee expects to forward £2500 to the High Commissioner, and anticipates that a further £3OO will later be available.—Received. Application from Bunn and Sons for permission to use the borough water supply for road construction purposes for a further seven days as from the 27th inst., at a rate of 10s per day.— Application granted.
F. J. Mann, thanking the council foi its appreciation of his work in connection with the fire in the plantation at the reservoir, and advising that C Powell also gave valuable assistance ir, fighting the lire. —Received. Clerk, Dunedin City Council, wrote relative to the Municipal Conference to be held at Dunedin, commencing on March 8, 1939.—Received.
