1938-39 SEASON OPENED A LARGE ATTENDANCE The Wanganui Croquet Chib had ideal weather lor the official opening of the season which took place yesterday. The pavilion and lawns were scenes of activity as group after group came along to join the crowd. From the pavilion a delightful view is obtained of the flowering cherry trees, which are a feature on St. John’s Hlh just now, also the picturesque scenery directly ahead and hilly country bcyound. Beds of azalia mollis, roses and hydrangeas flanked the paths and the green hedges surrounding the lawns were in perfect order. The vases ol delicate shaded Iceland poppies on the table in the pavilion were much admired. The president, Mrs. T. Ballingali, welcomed members and friends, and in referring to the good condition of the lawns tiianked the convener of the greens’ committee (Mr. W. F. Jarvie) lor his help, and also expressed thanks to Mr. C. h. E. Rhodes.
The Mayoress (Mrs. W. J. Rogers/ drove the first ball through the noo t > and made a brief speech for the opening ceremony. She spoke of the goou friendships, the good sportsmanship, and all tne things that go to make a successful and nappy ciub. She considered the club fortunate in its choice of a day, for the weather was glorious. Mrs. Rogers wished the club every success for the season and a very good summer. Mrs. A. Crawford presented the Mayoress with a shoulder spray of rich sunset roses and lachanalia, and to MrsJapallingall a spray of red cyclamen’ The visitors thoroughly enjoyed the outing, the games’ and j competitions and tne bountiful afternoon tea. The convener, Mrs. Carrig, was assisted by Mesdames H. F. Tilley, J. Blennerhassett and G. A. McDougal. A “bring-and-buy” stall in charge of Mesdames Delves and W. Falconer, was well patronised. The competitions were won as follows: Skittles, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvie; angles, , Mrs. Taylor; ladder, Willis (Auckland); golf croquet, Mrs. H. Holroyd; novelty break,
Mrs. J. Brass; hitting the bell, Mrs. Fisher; crazy hoops, Mrs. Jarvie. Among others present were;—Mesdames A. Crawford , Bassett-Smith, J. Blyth, H. F. Tilley, Delves, H. Rice, V.
