WAIMARINO SEAT

NATIONAL CANDIDATE AT RAETIHI A DIVIDED MEETING On Tuesday evening at the Theatre Royal, Raetihi, Mr. C. A. Boles, Nationalist candidate for Waimarino, addressed a public meeting which was attended by some 200 electors. Mr. D. J. Berry (chairman of the Waimarino County Council) presided in the absence of the Mayor of Raetihi (Dr. W. J. Feltham). The candidate accepted with good humour protests by Labour supporters against statements made by him during the twohour speech. Mr. Boles spent practically the whole of his time in criticising the actions and legislation of the present Government and on frequent occasions drew attention to the utterances of the sitting member for Waimarino (the Hon. F. Langstone). Labour’s Broken Promises He first of all spoke on the Labour Government’s broken promises, stating that they had failed in their promises concerning taxation, exchange rate, sales tax, wages tax and cost of living. The Labour Government’s land policy was next to be reviewed and this was followed by a trenchant criticism of the Social Security Act in all its phases. After quoting the twelve planks of the National Party’s platform, the candidate launched an attack on the alleged miss-use of the air, State interference with private enterprise, overseas delegations, the possibility of the abolition of the country quota, and the failure of the Government to increase the price of butter on sale in New Zealand by 2d per pound to con-' form with the increased guaranteed | price. At the conclusion of his address, j Mr. Boles answered a number of questions. A motion of thanks to the speaker and a hope that he would be successful was moved by Mr. H. J. Manson. It was declared carried but was subject to a fair amount of objection. The meeting concluded with cheers and counter-cheers intermingled with booing.
