THE PRIME MINISTER’S SPEECH
Sir. The Prime Minister’s explanation of why he did not fulfil his promise to remove the sales tax was typical of him. In a recent advertisement the Socialist Party announced that the cost of living had only -gone up 11 per cent. This no doubt will be swallowed by his followers, but it is an insult to expect anyone of even average intelligence to swallow. What counts is the purchasing power of a pound, and this had been very considerably reduced under Socialism. Two things will be remembered long after the burial of the Socialists next Saturday: first the high cost of living and secondly the long, long trail of broken promises. “You can fool some of the people all of the time and all uf the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the lime.’’ If the electors are so misled as to return the present dreamers to power then we shall have to change our National Anthem to “God Save New Zealand.’’—l am., etc. October 12, 1938. “ANTI-HUM B UG.”
