WAIMARINO COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGINEER’S REPORT The following report covering! county works for the month ofi September was submitted to the October meeting of the Waimarinu County Council by the county engineer (Mr. H. L. Hogg):—-
Huikumu Riding.—The temporary work at the wings of the "Half Moon" bridge appears to be satisfactory, and should maintain the approach to the bridge until such time as the new bridge is constructed. It is anticipated metalling on the Huikumu and Mangaeturoa roads will be pushed or now the weather conditions are likely to be favourable for a few months. Owing to pressure of other works I have not been able to attend to tiie subsidence on the Mangoihe Road. Karioi Riding. The work in tins riding is, as far as possible, being kept down to bare maintenance. The Mangaehuehu bridge and the Waiakaki culvert are now completed, and the new road line brought into use, the alignment of which is a great improvement on the old roadway. The principal work done has been general maintenance of the Wangaehu Valley Road, with periodical attention to the other roads. Manganui Riding. The order for the stringers for the Mangaturaturu bridge has not yet been completed, x anticipate, however, that the order for all the timber will be filled within the next week or so when the repair work will be pushed on without further delay. The small bridge near the Makara on the Ohura Foad was damaged by flood waters undermining one of the piers, thus taking away some of the support to the stringers causing subsidence. The necessary repairs have been done. The preliminary plans of the Makara Bridge submitted for comment and suggestions have not yet been returned from the Public Works Department. I expect to receive the plans before the end of the current month. Ohakune Riding.—Preliminary work is in progress in connection with tne bitumen work on the Ohakune road. The section to be sealed between tne Mangawhero bridge and the existing bitumen is being prepared, by strengthening the weak sections of metal, the camber reduced, the superelevation of the corner near Alans gateway adjusted, and the grade improved at the dip near the Makaranu: Station. I have been able to secure a supply of Dictar from Auckland for the priming coat; the material for toe seal coat has not yet been decided upon; road oil appears to be the material most favoured by the High?.a...Board for this class of road. Nothing further has been done in connection with repairs to the upper end of the Mangateitei Road; it may be convenient to do what is necessary on completion of the preliminary work on the Ohakune Road. Parapara Riding. I propose again calling tenders for metalling on the Matahiwi Road during the current period in the endeavour to get tne work in hand early in the season, n. comprehensive survey of the county section of the Parapara Road has been made by the Public Works Department where many deviations and alterations will be made to bring .his road up to highway standard. Punch s access road near the Mangan hero Bridge will be metalled as convenient. Ruatiti Riding.—There being two large slips on the Ohura Road it was necessary to transport a gang of workmen from Raetihi to clear the roadway. The Mangatiti Road between the Murumuru Road junction, and T. Brown s has now been reconditioned. There being only two engaged on tlic Mangapurua Road it is necessary for these men to give attention to the section already reconditioned in addition to the work they are engaged upon. ________
