WILSON CUP MATCH

NAPIER CLUB LOSES TROPHY. MANAWATU’S VICTORY. After having held the Wilson Cup for three years, the Napier Golf Club took the trophy with them for the challenge match with Manawatu at Hokowhitu on Saturday and the cup changed hands, Manawatu winning by the odd game. Saturday was a day “right out of the box,” the weather being absolutely perfect, and the Hokowhitu course has never been in better order, states the Manawatu Daily Times. Four-ball matches were played in the morning and Manawatu won these with a fair margin. In the afternoon the Wilson Cup matches were sent away and it was not long before reports began to come in that the top players were "burning up the course.” Longstaff, playing against Glendinning, started by holing a chip for the three at the first hole. He reached the turn in 84, Hugh Crosse in 35, Williams in 37 and Glendinning in 39. Napier were going to take a lot of beating. It looked like two wins for Napier. At the fifteenth tee it was reported that. Sutherland had accounted for Davies but Morris, at that stage, had Chapman fighting his hardest to save his match. The SinclairSmith match was still in the air but Goodwin appeared to be holding Fryer safe.

It was obvious that it was going to be a close finish and with two games still to come in the score was equal and Napier slill had every chance of retaining the trophy. One of the last games was wrn by Manawatu and A. E. Lawry staged a great finishing run to save the ether game for Napier. This gave Manawatu five wins to Napier's 'our, the other three being halved, and the cup had changed hands.

It had been a great match, and some of the golf played was of the highest class.

When all the players were back in the club house the trophy was handed over to the Manawatu captain, K. S. Glendinning, by F. C. Fryer, who extended to Manawatu the congratula-

tions and the best wishes of the Napier Club. He mentioned, inter alia, that Dug Murray, who had played in the inter-club match that day. had been a member of Napier’s 1904 team — their original Wilson Cup team. Mr. Glendinning suitably responded and he called for cheers for their friends from Waiohiki. Detailed results, with Napier players mentioned first, are as under; — Wilson C=ll>. H. J. Longstaff beat K. S. Glendinning. H. E. Crosse beat O. H. Williams. H. G. Davies lost to V. Sutherland. A. D. Morris beat E. R. Chapman. A. A. Sinclair halved with \V. W. Smith. F. C.
