INTOXICATED IN CAR

MOTOR MECHANIC FINED COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. I Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. Arrested at 1.30 o'clock yesterday morning in Britomart Place, Richard Henry Arthur Chatfield, aged 24, motor mechanic, admitted in the Police Court that he was in a state ot intoxication while in charge of a motor-car. The police said that a constable saw a car pull up and found Chatfield sitting on the rear bumper of the vehicle. He was intoxicated but not drunk in the ordinary sense. He admitted to the constable that he had taken liquor, having driven a friend home after a cabaret, and had beer and gin. Counsel said that Chatfield had previously borne an unblemished character. Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., imposed a fine of £25 and cancelled the licence for 18 months. He said that men should not take liquor when they know they have to drive motor-cars.
