LIVESTOCK MARKETS

BUOYANT TONE EVIDENT GOOD SALES OF DAIRY CLASSES In reviewing the past week's livestock activities, the Farmers’ Co-op. reports that a very firm range ot values is ruling at present for most classes. Competition for dairy cattie is very keen. There is a pronounced scarcity in this class as recent sales indicate, and some excellent realisations have been obtained during the week. Best quality springers and calved heifers have brought to £l5 10s. This figure is an appreciation on the previous week’s prices. Numerous other sales centre round £ll to £l3. With a very spirited enquiry, and even although quality is lacking in comparison to cattle yarded earlier in the season, this market is very firm and augurs well for the future, especially when there is an abundance of grass.

The beef section continues to display a high range of values. This market is definitely in short supply and will continue to do so for some little time to come; even Jersey oddments that are yarded realise good values. A range of same is as follows: Extra prime P.A. cows and heifers to £l3; prime from £lO to £l2; medium, £8 to £9; best finished Jersey beef, £8 15s; medium, £7 5s to £8; light and plainer kinds, £6 to £6 10s. Fat sheep show no alteration in values as compared with those of the previous week. Quotations are as follows: Best heavy wethers, 30s; prime wethers, 275, 28s 6d; lighter kinds 255; best heavy ewes 225, with medium quality 18s to 20s. No great activity has been shown in the store sheep section. This market is devoid of quotations for top sheep, and with these hard to acquire, transactions are of very little consequence. During the week a line of well grown good conditioned ewe hoggets realised 29s 4d, wether hoggets sold from 18s to 21s. These values are equal to those ruling of late. One can say that this market shows little alteration compared with that of lasi week.

Buyers are showing a little mere confidence in their search for store cattle and, at the present time, there exists a very keen enquiry for sta-tion-bred kinds. A freer demand exists for all well grown yearlings of good quality and condition. Recently sales at auction saw choice lines change hands at £7 4s and £6 9s, but the major sales figure round £5 15s and £6. Empty 2-year-old heifers have sold as high as £6 10s, with others at £6 to £6 6s. Cattle lacking in quality are not readily sold. This market still shows a distinct scarcity of good cattle. The usual auction sales saw good yardings dealt with and recent values have been well maintained. Graziers are operating very freely and acquiring good young cattle suitable for their requirements at prices slightly in advance of those of last week. Works buyers also obtained their usual quotas. With an early improvement in pasture growth we consider this market will show a further appreciation, especially for young cattle suitable for graziers. In the pig section prices still maintained their high level, and yardings during the week have been large. We report sales as follows: Best conditioned stores £2 5s to £‘2 10s, lighter, stores 30s to 335, choice weaners 25s' to 265, with others from 18s to 22s, 1 smaller and inferior kinds 11s to 12s.

Yard Sales Our fortnightly Wav.erley sale was held on the 16th. inst., when a moder- ■ ate entry in most classes was dealt I with. Some excellent realisations were obtained, especially in the dairy section where prices showed an appreciation compared with late. Graziers were to the fore for suitable cattie, and altogether a ready clearance was effected throughout. Realisations are as follows: Ewe hoggets, 29s 4d; wether hoggets, 17s to 18s 7d; b.f. hoggets, 20s 3d; best P.A. beef, £9 7s, £9 10s; best Jersey beef, £8 ss, with lighter £6 15s to £7 ss; choice Jersey crass yearlings, £7 6s, £6 9s; medium quality Jersey cross yearlings, £5 3s; best graziers’ cattle, £5 Bs, with numerous other sales from £3 18s to £4 10s; dairy heifers close to profit, £l2, £ll 15s, £ll 10s; dairy cows, close to profit, £l3, £l2, £11; backward heifers, £7 15s to £8 10s. Inglewood Sale.—This sale held on the 21st. inst. was undoubtedly the foremost dairy sale of the season. The bidding was brisk and a buoyant tone reigned throughout, a total clearance being effected. The cattle came forward in good condition despite the rigorous weather experienced during the past few weeks. It is evident by the demand that there is a scarcity of dairy stock at present and many farmers are still in need of replacements for their herds. Quotations are as follows: Springing heifers, £ll, £ll 10s, £l2 to £l3; dairy heifers, £9 10s to £lO 10s; calved heifers £lO to £ll 10s; springing cows £l2 to £l3 ss; dairy cows £ll 10s to £l2 10s; calved cows £lO 10s to £l2s. A good yarding of yearling heifers came forward, most of the cattle showing the effect of the boisterous weather and shortage of food, however they sold well as follows: Best yearlings, £5 17s, £6 ss; medium, £5, £5 ss; more backward, £4, £4 10s. The store section was well represented, prices being at late rates. Realisations were as follows: Fat cows £6, £6 10s, £7; good cows, £5, £5 10s; medium sorts/ £4, £4 15s; lighter cows, £3, £3 10s; grade bulls, £B, £8 15s. The two advertised horses on account Mr. V. Hine realised: Rising 4-year mare, £4B 10s; 12-month foal from this mare, £l7 10s,
