WANGANUI ASSOCIATION NEXT WEEK’S BOUT VIV GORDON TO MEET JOE COLLINS The Wanganui Boxing Association match committee has been successful in matching the local professional, Viv. Gordon, with Joe Collins, of Palmerston North. The two boys will be making their first appearance as professionals and for that reason will be keen to secure the verdict at the Opera House next Wednesday. In his exhibition with Gildo, Gordon proved himself, a classy boxer and a determined puncher. Joe Collins is a clever lightweight with a right hand that is a real "sleep producer.” His timing and his footwork are pretty to watch and he is sure to make an impression on Wanganui fans. Gordon should be with him all the way and a slashing fight should be the result.
The usual first-class amateur bouts will be added to thhe programme and the match committee was fortunate in being able to procure boys who competed in the New Zealand championships last week. A delegate is to visit Hawera to-night in search of further talent.
The Dominion championships held at Gisborne were a pronounced success and some wonderful fights were witnessed by the large audiences. A pleasing feature was the enthusiasm shown by the Gisborne school children, who swarmed to the championships during the afternoon sessions. The Wanganui Association has made provision for a large attendance of school children at their tournament on Wednesday next. Good support for the local boy is expected from the public and he is sure to draw a big following from Taranaki.
