ON AWAPUNI TRACKS

FINAL PREPARATIONS THURSDAY’S GALLOPS PALMERSTON N., Sept. 23. Alter rain during the night the tracks were heavy at Awapuni yesterday morning. The weather was fine, however, and the programme was in teresting. The course proper, with the flags about 20 feet out, was available, and all fast work was done there. Quadroon (Bowden) was one of tne first out and he was given a wo . king gai.'tp over six furlongs, being timed to run the distance in 1.26.

Corroboree (J. Chaplin) was galloped with Old Bill (Bowden), their task being over five furlongs. They were together at the finish and their time, 1.7*. was quite good. Both are engaged at Marton.

Vascones (Chaplin) scampered two furlongs in 26, moving as if the going was to her liking. Silver River (Dye) was not troubled in running seven in 1.40, and the Peach Brandy—Elvaette gelding was clocked to cover the same distance in 1.44.

The Bigot (H. Johnstone) and The Buzzer (light boy) were companions over six. The Bigot soon opened up a gap on his stablemate,' but when The Buzzer did elect to gallop he closed on The Bigot and he was on terms at the finish. The time was 1.26 4-5 and both horses went pleasingly. Ecstatic, with a light boy up, went three furlongs. She appeared to be going lazily, but she was going deceptively fast and she cut the distance out in 41 1-5.

Dainty Sue (W. J. Broughton) was worked over six and after being clocked to run from the five to the three in 29 she came home the last three in 41 3-5. It was a nice gallop and if the going is favourable at Marton she should run a good race. Puroto (Chaplin) and Vadanoe (Dye) sprinted five, the last four in 54i, and Puroto, in front, was going along very easily at the finish. It was one of Puroto’s best track gallops for some lime for she went kindly throughout. Oratory (Johnstone), under a good hold, ran four in 57, and she would like to have gone faster.

Hanover (S. Anderson), who seems to have made a complete recovery from his "buster” at Foxton, was exercised and then given a working gallop over six. Segra (Broughton), after even time for the first three, ran home the last three in 42 2-5 to complete six in 1.27 2-5. Segra finished full of running. Laughing Lass (Pratt) was timed to run the last three of four in 39 2-5.

The unnamed Nightmarch—Kilmiss gelding (Pratt) sprinted three furlongs in 41 1-5, going along very nicely, and Chere Arnie (Chaplin) beat Cuddler (K. Breuer) over five run in good time. They took 27 for the first two and they completed in 1.8 1-5 and Chere Amie might have improved on that. Aero Lad (Broughton), on his own, was not under pressure to run six in 1.28 4-5.

The first horses to go over the schooling hurdles were Entheos

(Chaplin), Tail Light (N. C. Trillo) and Pango (W. J. McDowell) and they gave a good exhibition. Against the light Entheos was not to sure about one fence, but otherwise it was a faultless display of fast jumping. Pango was eased up over the last bit and the others fought out the finish together. Strolling (W. E. Pine) jumped on his own, giving a really fine display. Warehi (Rae) was just in front of Porotiti (Anderson) and Sky Full (Broughton) at the end of seven cut out in 1.38, all three going well. Deflation (Anderson) and Classform (Chaplin) were given barrier practice and Classform proved the better of the two at getting off the mark. Another to go to the barrier was Tidal Gift (Broughton), who went away like a shot out of a gun. He continued for five furlongs, but he was easing up at the finish to record 1.13 2-5, tne first two in 28 2-5. Titter (light boy) and High Peer (Broughton), acceptors for the Maiden Race, had Sporting Gift (K. Kanake) as a companion over half a mile. Sporting Gift dwelt at the start and the other two set the pace, the first furlong taking 15 2-5, and they continued solidly to complete 55 4-5, Titter and High Peer, who galloped very well, still being in front at the finish.

Sporting Luck was no good to Cuisinier (Johnstone), who was well clear at the end of five, the last four of which took 55 3-5.

Royal Record was given a working gallop over a mile, and Rolling Home (Pine’ gave an excellent display over four hurdles.

The last of the earlier gallops was that in which Lady Ina (Johnstone) and Golden Ridge (J. Leach) figured. It was over five anti after running the two in 28, they came home in 40 to complete in 1.8, Golden Ridge being in front.
