BRITISH TEAM OF 1930
LETTER FROM A. L. NOVIS. A. L. Novis, remembered in New Zealand as a member of the 1930 British Rugby football team, writes to Mr. T. A. Fletcher, Dunedin, to say that his battalion has been ordered out to Palestine, and was to leave on September 1. “I don’t often see many of the fellows now (the members of the 1930 team), as we have all given up ‘Rugger,’ except Roger Spong, who still plays for his club,” Novis writes. “I see Joe Kendrew, of course, be-
cause he is in the regiment, although away on a three-year job. I also saw Henry Rew the other day—home on leave from India. “I am now a married man, and have a son (born in June). Perhaps he will come out with a team to New Zealand one day and have the pleasure of looking you up. Henry Rew is about the only bachelor left, but is threatening to get engaged any minute. “I see our team is not doing too well out in South Africa. I’m afraid it isn’t a very strong side. The forwards are not very big, and so are not able to give their backs much chance.” Novis refers to the marvellous times the 1390 team had, and adds: “I wonder how you all are in New Zealand; I should love to come back again.”
