ROADS AND BRIDGES

WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL ENGINEER'S REPORT The engineer, Mr. R. R. Dawson, reported as follows to yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui County Council on the work carried out during the month:— No. 50 Highway.—Plans have been finished for the reconstruction of this highway from the Union Line Junction to the Deniair Junction, and proposals will be submitted to the Highways Board for approval at an early date. Comprehensive metalling has been finished between Reid’s Hill and Kauangaroa for which gravel was obtained from the Wangaehu River. Mangamahu Road.—Metal repairs have been finished and further repairs will be carried out later between Ngaturi and Mangamahu, grit being obtained from Polson’s pit. Wangaehu Valley Road.—The filling, for the replacement of a bridge bridge has been dismantled. The filling at the approach of Collin's Bridge has been replaced. Light metal repairs have recently been made. Upper Wangaehu Valley Road.— This road is in fair condition for this season of the year. Willow planting has been started, the effect of which has been very beneficial results in this class of country. Field’s Track. —Light metal'repairs are being effected, otherwise this road is in good order. Parihouhou Road.—Minor metal repairs have recently been made. Comprehensive additions and repairs have been made to the council cottage on this road. Wanganui River Roads.—Repairs have been finished to the council cottage at Pitangi. Ordinary general maintenance is being carried out on the Matahiwi, Morikau, and Otaranoho roads. These roads are in fair order for this season of the year. Kaiwaike Road.—This road near its junction with the 48 Highway is beingwidened. Relief labour is being employed and great improvement is being made. Kaimatera Road.—Fail- progress is being made with the construction cr a concrete bridge on this road. Trouble has been experienced in obtaining the foundations. However, that difficulty has now been overcome, and the job will be finished within a few weeks. Okoia Roads.—Metal repairs have been made on the Long Acre, Thompson's, and Gordon Park roads. The re-alignment and widening of the No. 3 Line is being carried out by relief labour, and much improvement is being made. Metal repairs will be effected on the Waikoupa and Matarawa roads at an early date. ’ Fordeli Roads.—All roads have received surface repairs and have been te-shaped by the grader plant. Deniair Roads.—A small timber bridge has been replaced with a cui- ' vert and filling, and a narrow portion of the road has been widened. Union Line.—Metai repairs have I been made and a large timber cul--1 vert has been replaced in concrete. Roads oft No. 1 Highway.—Only ordinary maintenance repairs have been > effected on these roads, which are in ! fair condition. I .■=.
