REGENT THEATRE
“CASSIDY OF BAR 20,” AND “TIP-OFF GIRLS.” Revolvers and automatics seemefl to be the theme-song at the Regents Theatre yesterday, but for all similarity of weapons in the two full* length features the programme wa4 well balanced. Clarence Mulford conj ceived the Bar 20 and its boys, but for theatregoers it is William Boyd who has made that delightful charac4 ter Hopalong Cassidy. Rather mora excitement is packed into “Cassidy ot Bar 20,” than the film versions of ther other Mulford books, the greater part’ of it being contributed by Cassidy* The plot runs true to “Westerns,’’ with the hero, villain (black somreroi denotes the role), and the girl whoso father’s ranch is opposed; but if t were otherwise there would not be’ the same attracion. Cut fences* rustled cattle, and villainy disguised bl law and order are the ingredients of this fast-moving film, and if Hopalong's face and poetry at the end mean anything his days as a bachelor are few. Nora Blake, who is in« volved in this curtailed liberty, is played by Nora Lane, and the comedy; comes from Pappy (Frank Darien)* From this old-time rustling the pro* gramme turns to modern Americait methods of “hijacking” in “The Tip« off Girls.” Huge road transports* carrying furs and other valuable merchandise, are held up by the ingeni* ous method of using girls in “dis* tress.” The plot is deep and always alive. The main parts are taken b/ Lloyd Nolan, Mary Carlisle, Roscoa Karns, Larry Crabbe and Evelyn Brent. Children’s Party This afternoon at 2 p.m. there will I be staged a special children’s [which all children are invited to at* tend. On the screen there will b< “Cassidy of Bar 20,” featuring Wil* Jiam Boyd, and “The Radio Patr.?.’,’ 1 the first episode of this thrilliiij serial. On the stage there wili o 4 games, competitions and fun for all* in addition to “Mysto,” the man ol magic, “Jerry,” the talking doll, and “Aloha,” the Hawaiian with nil guitar.
