MAJESTIC THEATRE

“A YANK AT OXFORD” There are few productions with the appeal of “A Yank at Oxford,” which concludes its Wanganui season to-night at the Majestic Theatre. Scenically it is superb, and the atmosphere of the institution is felt, though in this case it is the frolics and spirit of youth that seize the audience. Robert Taylor, Maureen and Lionel Barrymore head a convincing cast, in which Griiliths Jones plays an important part. It is the story of Lee Sheridan, from a college in the Middle West, sent to Oxford, filled to the brim with American ideals and enthusiams. Quite a lion in his home town, where he is the best all-round athlete, he falls foul of British conservatism in a railway carriage, where he is suavely trapped into making a complete ass of himself by fellow-under-graduates. There is not a dull moment after this. He commences by kicking a dean in the pants by a very pardonable mistake, but through his sprinting and rowing, and breezy, straightforward ways, works himself into the good will of his fellow-students.

“Romance for Three” “Romance for Three,” a bright, nonstop comedy, is showing to-morrow at the Majestic Theatre. There is not a dull moment in the picture, which features a galaxy of talent including Frank Morgan, Robert Young, Florence Rice and Mary Astor. As a millionaire Viennese manufacturer who yearns for a return to simple pleasures, Frank Morgan wins a free holiday in a slogan competition conducted by his own firm and spends it in the Alps. Unfortunately the millionaire becomes involved with al divorcee (Mary Astor), and his house-! keeper, the formidable Edna May Oliver, rushes to the scene to try anil smooth things out before it is too late. Also at the hotel is the young man who has won a free holiday in the same competition, and he finds romance in the Alps with Morgan’s daughter. In order to win his love she poses as a poor girl, and it is when all return to Vienna that some explanations are due.
