Mr. H. M. Christie, M.P. for Waipawa, who has been attending the International Wool Conference in London, is a passenger by the Rangitane, due at Auckland on August 24. Mr. G. E. Mitchell, train-running officer in the Railways Department at Wanganui, has arrived in Invercargill to take up his duties as transport officer. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. T. W. Downes was expressed by the chairman, Mr. L. J. B. Chapple, at a meeting of the Whanganui Historical Committee on Monday night when it was decided to send a letter of condolence to the bereaved family. The Rev. J. W. Burton, general secretary of the overseas missionary department of the Methodist Church •of Australasia, formerly of Wanganui, is a through passenger for Fiji by the Niagara, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Tuesday. He is to complete arrangements for extending the educational side of missionary work in Lhe Fiji Group. Mr. H. J. Duigan was elected a member of the executive of the North Island Land Valuers’ Association at the annual conference at Palmerston North on Wednesday. Mr. J. G. Harcourt, of Wellington, was re-elected president, and Mr. P. H. Wood, oi Marton, vice-president. Mr. R. L. Gibson, of Marton, was also elected to the executive. The Very Rev. Dr. D. Macfarlane, moderator last year of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, will arrive in Auckland about October 27. Dr. Macfarlane, a noted preacher and orator, has been appointed official delegate from the Church of Scotland to attend the General Assembly of the New Zealand Church in November. L Congratulations were extendXl on Wednesday night by the Palmerston North Central School Committee to its chairman, Mr. W. G. Black, on his election to the Wanganui Education Board. Mr. W. J. Fitzgerald said the school had reason to be proud of the election of Mr. Black, and he felt sure that the latter would do his best not only for the Central School, but. for education generally. In returning thanks, Mr. Black said that he would do his best to retain the confidence that had been placed hi him by school committeemen in the Palmerston North area.
