Grey St. (Liverpool St.-Parsons St.) 38 Fergusson St. (Victoria Av.London St.) 26 Alma Rd. (York St.-Abbot St.) 13 Abbot St. (already authorised) 35 Bell St. (Ingestre St.-Dublin St.) 21 Wilson St. (Taupo Quay-Ridgway St.) 7 140 The city engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) was authorised to form a narrow footpath in Delhi Avenue and Madras Street for such distance as he considers necessary to give the residents reasonable access. Mr. Row was also authorised to proceed with the forming and tarsealing of traffic ways in Aramoho Park Cr. J. J. Scott criticised the selection of localities. He contracted the treatment accorded the respective suburbs, holding that Castlecliff, which he described as Cr. A. W. Scoullar's ’'electorate,” as having been "left at the post.” Gonville had a total of 1575 chains (including footpaths and streets), he said. Aramoho 24, St. John's Hill 505, College Estate 1035, Wanganui East 345, and the city 28. He was not quibbling about the urgency of the works, but considered that a more equitable distribution was desirable. He moved an amendment that the list be referred back to the works committee with that object. Cr. Scott also opposed the holding over of the sealing of Brunswick Road. Replying, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) said that the programme drawn up was only portion of the year’s work, and no pressure whatever had been brought to bear on the engineer in submitting the list. One suburb was not given preference as against another. So far as Gonville was concerned one street had been recommended by the past council and had not been done yet. Cr. O. Hales, chairman of the works committee, endorsing the Mayor, said that some councils adopted a policy of sealing from the centre of a city and moving outwards, on a basis that the central portions had paid rates for a longer period. That was not done in this case, but the work was distributed as fairly as it was possible to do with the money and material available. So far as Castle< cliff was concerned, the council intended to do quite a lot of work there. Morgan Street was to be extended, for instance. "Brunswick Road will be considered, and I am sure favourably considered, later on,” said Cr. Hales. Cr. G. P. Hawkins said that he was guided by the engineer in these matters, and as the engineer had reported that a good deal of preparation work was needed on Brunswick Road before it could be sealed, he agreed to holding it over. The list was approved as submitted.
