THE GOVERNMENT’S PLANS SYNOD’S ANXIETY FOR DIOCESAN FUND COMMENT BY MR. C. P. Brown at this afternoon’s session of the Wellington Diocesan Synod when sponsoring a motion referring to the possible effect of the Government social security proposals on the Diocesan Pension Fund The motion, which was carried, instructed a special committee set up to watch the interests of the clergy and to report to the Standing Committee upon the effect of the Government’s proposals on the pension fund so that the Pension Fund Act couu be modified if necessary. “I feel that the Government scheme will go on and that if any relief from double payment is necessary that concession will have to be made m our own pensions scheme,” said Mr. Brown. Archdeacon W. Bullock said the special committee set up by Synod had no intention of waiting on the Government, but was merely to watch the interests of the clergy. The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, said he had a copy of a letter sent by the Secretary of the Province of New Zealand on behalf of the Archbishop of New Zealand to the Minister of Finance inquiring what effect the Government’s scheme would have on the clergy’s pensions scheme, and also a copy of the Minister’s reply. “We already have a certain amount of knowledge of what the Government's mind is on the matter,” said the Bishop, “but I do not propose to divulge that at the moment.” At a later stage in the Session the action of Standing Committee in setting up a committee to watch the interests of the clergy in connection with the Government's social security proposals was approved.
