SCHOOLS BOYCOTTED
WOMEN’S PLEA FOR SAFETY. CONCERTED ACTION TAKEN. A group of women, parents of the children in two council schools at Wi'llesdeen, North West London, are engaged in boycotting the schools to force their demands for road safety. Three children have been killed outside the Brentfield and Bridgeroad schools and the mothers have now sent an ultimatum to the Willesden Council and the Ministry of Transport demanding a 10 m.p.h. speed limit outside both schools, guard rails, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and police supervision. At the moment they have been promised the guard rails. The leader of the boycotting movement is Mrs. M. E. Clarke, who planned the “strike" which kept 1500 children away from school. The two buildings were picketed by 30 mothers, who advised the children not to go in, and a procession of 200 children marched round the district as a demonstration of their wishes. A playground is being organised for the children in one of the schools, while the mothers and the authorities fight the matter out.
