WANGANUI INITIATIVE

CHILDREN’S CARDEN CIRCLE PREPARATIONS FOR ANNUAL SHOW The enthusiasm with which Wanganui and district residents have taken . up the Children’s Garden Circle move- ■ ment was again emphasised by a large • attendance at a meeting of members of the C.G.C. held in McGruer’s Hall last evening. The president, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, extended a welcome to delegates from the newly-formed Kai Iwi Circle, and in doing so stressed the value of the work of the C.G.C. movement as a means of training young people in j good citizenship and civic pride. He I paid a warm tribute to the services j voluntarily performed by the orga- • niser, Mr. P. Cox, and the secretary I and treasurer, Mr. and Mrs. J. | Shanks, who in addition to their ser- ! vices so ably given to the city organiI sat ion, aiso sacrificed a lot of their leisure time to visiting country districts and giving demonstrations in 1 furtherance of the movement. Mr. Donaldson also complimented 1 the various branch circles on their enthusiasm in the cause of the Children’s Garden Circle movement,, which was initiated in Wanganui and is now attracting attention over a wide area, thanks to the successful broadcast talk by the organiser, Mr.' P. Cox. from the Auckland commer- ■ cial station, and Mr. A. Waugh from I 2YA, Wellington. Wanganui holds; the distinction of successfully intiat-l ing the Health Camp movement for, children which, as is well known, has | now become a Dominion-wide move-1 ment receiving the recognition and! support of the Government. He pre-' dieted that the time was not far distant. when the Children’s Garden Circle movement would also extend throughout, the Dominion. “The business to be discussed at to-night’s meeting is the matter or organising . the annual flower show of the circle,’’ said Mr. Donaldson in conclusion, “and I hope that everybody will pull together in an effort to make this year’s display the best yet held." The meeting unanimously endorsed Mr. Donaldson’s remarks regarding the organiser and secretary and treasurer with a round of applause. It was decided to allow the dates ’ tentatively selected for the annual show to be given to the Wanganui i and Suburban Horticultural Society • provided suitable dates could be obI tained for the use of the Drill Hall ! late. It was stated that the desire I of the C.G.C. was to help the senior I horticultural society in every way possible, for it had invariably come to the assistance of the C.G.C. whenever appealed to. The president hoped . that the present happy relations between the two societies would long 1 continue. I Matters of detail in connection -with the annual show were then dis- ’ cussed and a very successful meeting • closed with a vote of thanks to the | -chair. 1 _. . . .
