WANGANUI HARBOUR

MEETING OF THE BOARD REPORTS OF OFFICERS The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr N. G. Armstrong presiding over a full attendance. The harbourmaster (Mr F. E. Naylor) reported that the depth at tnt entrance during the month of June was 21ft. 6in. high water ordinary spring tides, ISft. 6m. high water neap tides, and 13ft. 6in. at low water ordinary spring tides. Sixty-one vessels arrived at the port during the month of June, representing a tonnage of 30,075. These included 34 iighters, which accounted for 3578 tons. One overseas vessel berthed—the t.s.m.v. Rabaul, whicr. discharged 1342 tons of sulpnur. The intercolonial vessel Tynebank discharged 3943 tons of phosphates. One overseas vessel used the roadstead—the s.s. Surrey. Construction of Moles. “Under adverse weather conditions a fairly regular supply of shell rock has been obtained from the quarries for the crown of the south mole out to the pile groyne, and this part ol the work will be completed at an early date,” reporied the resident consulting engineer (Mr R. R. Dawson). “Over 2600 tons ot concrete blocks arc now on hand to be transported to the south mole for raising same at the outer end which work will be commenced within a fortnight. “It is proposed to tip approximately 75 per cent, of the concrete blocks and allow a few w’eks’ interval for settlement before finally completing the job. In the meantime the raising ol the river training wall in the vicinity of the Gas Wharf and repairing the basin wall will be effected with smad shell rocx from the quarries. The accumulation of large shell rock will later be placed in the south mole »r. conjunction with the tinal supply oi concrete blocks. Marram grass is being planted and sand fences are being erected on the South Spit to arrest the sand." Dredging at Imlay Mhari. “A sub-committee set up in connection with dredging operations at Imlay Wharf, together with the harbourmaster (Captain F. E. Naylor L discussed the position with Mr H. E. Ziesler, manager of tnc New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., Ltd., and after further consideration, suggested to Mr Siesler that in the event of dredging aecoming necessary the board agree to expend up to 5 per cent, of the wharfage revenue from the wharl, such expenditure to be averager over periods of two years, subject to the proviso that the New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., Ltd., shall not in any way increase its lighterage charges ic .he board, slated the cnairman (Mr xj, G. Armstrong). “Mr Ziesler leferred the matter to his head office and was instructed to accept the offer for one year only.” The report was adopted.
