HARBOUR BOARD LAND
PLANTING OF TREES I RGED USE: OF RELIEF LABOUR. The clearing up of certain Harbour Board lands and the planting of trees was advocated at a meeting of the Wanganui board yesterday by Mr. R. Farley. Subsidised labour is to be made use of by the board for construction of a wall at the South Spit, repairs to the river training walls and basin wall at Castlecliff, and removal of the cattle wharf. These were works put before the State authorities as a result of a combined meeting of the finance and works committees of the board. It was decided to add Mr. Farley’s suggestion to the list and also a suggestion by the chairman of the hoard (Mr N. G. Armstrong) that gorse be grubbed from Balgownie swamp to prevent it spreading. The engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) is to put the works on the list in hand as circumstances warrant. s
