OVERCROWDED HALLS

FIRE BOARDS CONCERN. DANGER IN EVENT OF FIRE. The attention of the Wanganui City Council is to be drawn tc the fact that more persons than permitted by their licences are being permitted to attend gatherings in city halls. This decision was made at yesterday’s quarterly meeting of the Wanganui Fire Board after a brief discussion on the

danger of overcrowding in publicbuildings. The matter was raised by the chairman, Mr. A. E. Halligan, who instanced Harman’s Hall. This hall, he said, was licensed to accommodate from 400 to 500 people, yet there was l an attendance of more than 800 at a 1 recent gathering. This would have been a serious position if a fire had broken out and it was the duty of the board to bring the matter before the notice of the City Council.
