WANGANUI RUGBY
BIG CLUB CONTEST VITAL MATCH FOR FIRST ROUND TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW Technical Old Boys and 55 aiiganui and Old Boys are to play tomorrow in the vital match of the first round in the sVanganui Metropolitan Union’s senior competition. They are both unbeaten teams. Both clubs are noted for the reliance they place on back play anu, accordingly, are invariably looxed to to provide Rugby of the attractive type. That they will be evenly matched goes without saying, and botn sides have been training in anticipation of the match. Wanganui and Old Boys have shown good form in the backs thu year, and if the pack can apply the “devil” it displayed against Kaierau on the opening day, the opposing van will have a hard task. Technical Old Boys, on the other hand, also have an attractive team behind the scrum, perhaps a little more reliable on defence than the opposition. In the pack they have players who can always rise to the occasion in a hard match. On paper this team looks the best all-round side in the city competition, and it will probably be found that the mistakes it made in playing against Pirates last Saturday will be no criterion as to how it will shape against a harder team to-morrow. The match will be difficult to pick. The rival teams for to-morrow’s encounter have been selected as follows. 55anganui and Old Boys. Full-back: G. Hook. Three-quarters: J. Polson, D. Evans, J. Mitchell. Five-eighths: D. Barton (2nd), E. Nicholls. Half-back: E. Chamberlain. Front row: E. Hansen, L. Northover, M. McGregor. Middle row: J. Cooke, T. Collins, L. Bourke, G. Robinson. TARANAKI’S DEFEAT OF WELLINGTON ALL BLACKS' OPINION . MR. W. J. WALLACE’S COMMENTS The three highlights of the game were the drop-kick by John Meuli towards the end of the match, his penalty goal, an effort, worthy of an All Black, and J. L. Griffiths’ try, said Mr. W. J. Wallace, 1905 All Black, at the dinner to the Wellington and Taranaki Rugby teams at Hawero on Thursday. He had noticed that the first six times Wellington hooked the ball Meuli tackled Griffiths cleanly. He was not in accord with the theory that it was good defence to run backs across field, continued Mr. Wallace. Not only had Meuli tackled Griffiths cleanly, but the reverse took place later, Griffiths doing the same to Meuli. He was a firm believer that each back should tackle his opponent right along the line, if only for the sake of the forwards. It the first five-eighths made sure of his man the forwards were on the spot immediately but not so if they had to run across the field to tackle the wing three-quarter.
