OBITUARY

MR. W. G. NIGHTINGALE. Veteran sporting writer. ( per A Morin* ion.] NAPIER. May 25. Mr. W. G. Nightingale, for the last 50 years sporting contributor to the Daily Telegraph and other papers. Is dead. Mr. Nightingale was one of the oldest sporting writers in the Dominion. He started as a turf writer in the columns of the Waipawa Mail in the middle nineties, but as long back as 1874 wrote as “Peeping Tom” fur the Otago Daily Times on pedestrian events. For many years he furnished weekly articles on racing to papers in New Zealand. So well versed was Mr. Nightingale in pedigrees that he was known as “the Pedigree King.” At one time he owned and raced horses, a notable one being Moonee who paid a dividend of well over £l2O. He served his time to the saddlery business in Dunedin, and in his early days won a number of foot races in that city Mr. Nightingale was secretary of the Waipukurau Racing Club for more than 10 years.
