... WANGANUI MATCHES ... NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Waverley”) Healey, in goal for Thistle, gave a brilliant display. Towards the close of the game it was a case of Healey j versus the Marist forwards, but the goalkeeper managed to keep out every shot. Healey’s save from Dark was an excellent one—a high drive to corner of the post, which looked a scorer all the way. Cooper and Pattersen were very safe at full-back, in fact, Cooper played one of his best games since he came to Wanganui. Davis, at righthalf, played a hard game and found time to get the ball up the wing to i Thomson. McDonald, at centre-half, who had ; played in an earlier game, proved himself to be right up to senior grade, iHe cleared his lines well, and tried ,to help the forwards in attack. IZarrison, at left-half, played a strong defensive game and allowed Braddley few chances to repeat his performance of the previous week, when the Marist winger scored three goals against Athletic. Thistle could field nine men only, with the result that their forwards had no inside men to fetch the bail for them, but despite this they managed to score three goals. Thomson, on the right wing, made some good runs and was unlucky not to score on one occasion. Conder directed the play to Ifis wings, but he, like the wingers, missed the support of his inside men. Kidd, on the left wing, scored onegood goal and from two of his efforts the ball was deflected into goal by a defender. Goodall, in goal for Marist, gave an improved display. He had no chance with the goals scored against him. The full-backs were very shaky and never settled down all day. The half-back line did not go as well as they did against Athletic Fairclough tried hard to get the equalising goal but had no luck. His goal from a penalty was well taken. The Marist forwards were never very dangerous, and at no time revealed the form of the previous week. They were inclined to bunch neat the goal, with the result that many shots were stopped by themselves. E. Fairclough and Dark were the best forwards and Ted Fairclough scored a good goal. Marist are a good team and will develop into quite a strong combination. The Eastbrooke-Athletic game was evenly contested and it was not until late in the second spell that the ’Brooke secured the winning goals Hubbard, in goal, was in top iorm and saved a penalty. The backs were safe and the halves kept their forwards well supplied with the ball. In the forward line Eastbrooke were always dangerous, all five goals coming from the front line. Athletic played much better than against Marist, and did well to equalise after being down three goals to one at halftime. Davis, a junior player, played a great game, and scored all three Athletic goals. The junior game between Tech. Old Boys and Technical College was productive of some good football. 010 Boys are a good side and play an attractive type of game. From goai out they are very sound, and will be a difficult team to beat in the junior competition.
