WANGANUI MAYORAL CANDIDATES SPEAK MR. ROGERS PLEASED When the result of the Wanganui Mayoral election became known last evening the candidates (Messrs W. J. Rogers and G. H. Trott) briefly addressed the public at city theatres ana also a large crowd that had gathered • in Victoria Avenue, opposite the Plaza ' Theatre. An enthusiastic reception ' was accorded the speakers at all I points. j “I have come to say ‘thank you' for } the decisive verdict you have given in Imy favour, demonstrating that you i are satisfied to repose confidence in ime for a further term,” said Mr ! Rogers. “I shall endeavour to carry out my duties to the best of my ability and to your satisfaction.” “I wish to congratulate Mr Trott on the good fight he made.” continued Mr Rogers. “He was a worthy opponent. and put up a great effort. We are the best of friends and will alwav® remain so.” : Mr Rogers paid tribute to the men i and women who had assisted Labour I in its campaign in the election. The i spirit of co-operation had been a noteworthy factor, and some ways resoonsible for his victory. i “Whatever our political views, how- ■ ever, we must work as a whole and i in co-operation for the well-being of I . the city,” said Mr Rogers. “For the ; ! next th**ee years I will do my best I , for the city in return for your confi- ! Rogers has won his fourth I Mayoral victory in Wanganui. He 1 was Successful on three occasions in ' the past and was beaten once only, j It was in May, 1927, that he first became Mayor, defeating Mr Hope ; Gibbons. In 1929 there was a tri- ; angular contest for the Mayoralty, ! and the polling resulted: Mr Rogers , 5145, Mi- Hope Gibbons 2435, Mr John
; Morrison, who entered at a late hour. ■ 760. There was 8340 valid votes, with . 71 informal. I In 1931, Mr N. G. Armstrong opI posed Mr W. J. Kogers and was suci cessful, polling 4855 votes to 470 G ' polled by Mr Kogers. ' In 1933, Mr Kogers did not seeic Mayoral honours, and Mr Armstrong : was opposed by Mr J. T. Hogan, Mr i Armstrong being successful by 484.3 : votes to 3944. : In 1935, Mr Armstrong did not seek J a further term as Mayor. The two j candidates on that occasion were Mr I W. J. Kogers and Mr W. M. Falconer. ' Mr Rogers being elected, polling 5731 • votes to 4743 polled by Mr Falconer. | There were 10,477 valid votes, with 66 | informal. I
